Apple Pie Cinnamon Rolls with Cream Cheese Icing

img_9594Two of my favorite things are apple pie and cinnamon rolls so why not combine them! Fluffy, rich, and topped with a cream cheese icing makes these a Saturday morning must.

Since Michael and I are breakfast/brunch addicts I have been taking advantage of our Saturday mornings off for new breakfast ideas and this one was a hit. If you're looking for a healthy breakfast option you may want to bypass this one but if you want delicious cinnamon heaven then keep on scrolling!

Apple Pie Cinnamon Rolls
Prep Time 1-2 hours

Ingredients
Dough
  • 2 ½ cups flour
  • 3 tablespoons Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 package instant yeast
  • ½ cup Water
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 3 tablespoon Butter softened
  • 1 egg lightly beaten
Filling
  • 3 tablespoons Butter softened
  • 4-5 tablespoons cinnamon
  • ¼-1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 can apple pie filling
Cream Cheese Frosting
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 ½ ounces cream cheese softened
  • ½ cup Butter softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 3 tablespoons Butter softened
  • 4-5 tablespoons cinnamon
  • ¼-1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 can apple pie filling
Cream Cheese Frosting
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 ½ ounces cream cheese softened
  • ½ cup Butter softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
Dough
  1. Mix 2 ½ cups flour, sugar, salt, and yeast. Set aside.
  2. Heat water, milk, and 3 T butter.
  3. Stir in water mix to dry mixture and let stand for about 5 minutes so that the yeast can activate. Then add in egg.
  4. Mix on low with dough hook for 6 minutes.
  5. Add extra flour a tablespoon at a time per minute while mixing for smooth dough.
  6. Allow dough to rest for 5 minutes.
  7. Roll into large rectangle.
Filling
  1. Spread 3 tablespoons softened butter on dough.
  2. Mix together cinnamon, brown sugar and sprinkle dough evenly with mixture.
  3. Chop apple pie filling into small pieces and spread over top of cinnamon mixture.
  4. Start with the long side of the dough and rightly roll.
  5. Cut with sharp knife into 9-12 even pieces.
  6. Place dough onto greased baking sheet about 1-2 inches apart.
To Rise
  1. Place rolls in warm draft free area and allow to rise until they have doubled in size (usually 1-2 hours). I heat my over to 250 degrees, turn the oven off, and place my rolls in the oven with the door cracked open.
  2. When ready to bake, preheat oven to 350 degrees for 25 minutes or until golden brown.
Frosting
  1. Mix together powdered sugar, cream cheese, vanilla, and butter until completely smooth.
  2. Poor frosting over warm cinnamon rolls and enjoy!
