"If in doubt, anything looks good with a white shirt."
– VICTORIA BECKHAM
The hunt for the perfect white button-down. You’ve been there, I’ve been there – trust me, we’ve all been there. From finding the perfect crisp J.Crew version for my first job interviews to the Ralph Lauren oxford I wore all through college to finding that perfect oversize fit that looks effortless but not disheveled or a slinky silk version to pair with denim for a date night – The white button-down shirt is the most versatile, yet differing piece in a woman’s wardrobe. Is there one perfectly balanced option that could be used for all of these occasions? Maybe, but if you’re like me, the little details matter, making or breaking an outfit. Here, I’ve tracked down my tried and true, favorite finds, and white button-down staples in varying price ranges.
1. OVERSIZED & RELAXED
My personal favorite: The Jenni Kayne Boyfriend. I’m a serial shirt tucker, so this is my idea of the perfect oversized shirt. It’s a thinner fabric, cut a little closer to the body than others in this category so it tucks beautifully without any uncomfortable bulk. Love the one pocket and collar lay on this one. If I’m not tucking, this oversized Ralph Lauren is the way to go. Love the hem untucked.
Best on the budget: The J.Crew Etienne. It’s under $100 and holds up beautifully wash after wash. It’s definitely oversized and in a slightly thicker fabric. Think more stole your husband’s dress shirt type style. Lays nicely tucked or untucked, but go with this one if you like a lighter fabric.
Splurge worthy: Anine Bing Essie. I love Anine Bing for their modern take on classics and quality of fabrics. I’ve been eying this specific button-down, loving the drop shoulder and hem style. Also love the unique cut on the Door’s Always Open by Favorite Daughter. A great option for spring and summer.
2. slim & tailored
My personal favorite: Ralph Lauren Stretch Cotton. If I’m going for a slim fit, this is the one I’m reaching for. I love how the bit of stretch makes it that much more comfortable.
Best on the budget: Banana Republic Everyday Shirt. A best seller for a reason, this shirt is the perfect fit for casual to dressy.
Splurge worthy: Veronica Beard Marisol. I personally prefer to see the buttons on a shirt, so I love this crisp style. If you like hidden buttons and a slim, tailored fit, the Theory Fitted Shirt in Good Cotton is the one for you.
3. OXFORD & LINEN
My personal favorite: Ralph Lauren Classic Fit Linen. I love the simple cut of this linen version for spring and summer and the AYR Deep End oxfords have been on constant rotation for several years now.
Best on the budget: J.Crew Irish Linen. At around $100, and often on sale, this linen is understated, classic, and perfect for warm weather. The Everlane Boxy Oxfords are on the top of my to buy list. I adore the shape and oversized pockets.
Splurge worthy: Reiss Campbell. Love the length and ease of this one.
4. Silk & Chiffon
My personal favorite: Vince Stretch Silk. I love the movement and ease of this pick. It’s more special, but effortless in the best way. Adore this Club Monaco find for even more of a statement.
Best on the budget: This J.Crew short sleeve is unique and precious with denim. Also love their tie-neck version.
Splurge worthy: Banana Republic Everyday Silk. Not much of a splurge and love the shade.
