Where to stay

London, with its endless charm, offers a unique flavor in each of its boroughs. Between Hyde Park and Regent’s Park lies Marylebone, a true haven in the city with its chic, village-like atmosphere and elegant architecture. For those seeking luxury, Mayfair and Knightsbridge are ideal for indulging in high-end shopping, fine dining, and leisurely strolls near iconic landmarks like Buckingham Palace and Hyde Park. If a peaceful, picturesque setting is more to your taste, Notting Hill and Hampstead captivate with their colorful houses, quaint boutiques, and lush parks. Meanwhile, Covent Garden and Soho buzz with vibrant markets, cozy cafes, and the sparkle of West End theaters. Whether you’re looking for charm, elegance, or a quiet escape, London’s diverse boroughs offer something to match every taste.

Our London home and, quite possibly, our favorite stay in the world, Chiltern Firehouse is something special. Unfortunately, at the time I’m writing this they have had a heartbreaking fire in the kitchen and had to shut down for renovations. There is no timeline of a return date or even news of one yet, but one has to hope that a place this beloved will be making quite the return, so I’m leaving it on this guide as a manifestation of sorts. Uniquely housed in a former 1880s fire station in the most charming Marylebone, Chiltern combines a stunning, restored interior with the most inviting, intimate atmosphere, standing out for their unique blend of historic charm and modern luxury. Their restaurant and bar are what they’re most known for, with an innovative, comforting menu and the stylish yet relaxed ambiance that attracts a trendy, celebrity following. Intriguingly exclusive, their signature scent, impeccable service, attention to detail, and ability to set a mood make it a standout spot in London’s vibrant hotel and dining scene.

With its rich history, exceptional service, and timeless luxury, you can’t think of London without thinking of Claridge’s. Located in the heart of Mayfair, Claridge’s offers a blend of classic Art Deco design with modern sophistication, creating a refined and inviting atmosphere. With its iconic afternoon tea, world-class dining, art deco glamour, 1930s-style bar, and bespoke experiences, the hotel has long been a favorite among royals, celebrities, and discerning travelers. The impeccable attention to detail and dedication to providing a personalized experience make it one of London’s national treasures. I mean, it was frequented by Queen Victoria, how much more influential can you get?

As the newest addition to our radar, The Twenty Two stands out for its blend of contemporary luxury and sophisticated design, offering a fresh take on high-end hospitality. Located in the Mayfair district, it exudes that intriguing exclusivity, with only 31 rooms, ensuring a more intimate and personalized experience. Their chic interiors, exceptional service, and crave-able dining options make it a standout in London’s competitive luxury scene. With its stunning atmosphere and attention to detail, The Twenty Two has quickly become a sought-after destination for those seeking a chic, unforgettable stay.

With its elegant interiors, exceptional attention to detail, and rich history, The Connaught is the epitome of Englishness. Nestled in the heart of Mayfair, it offers a refined atmosphere with impeccable service, making it a favorite for both visitors and locals. With its Michelin-starred restaurants and iconic Art Deco bar, The Connought is a great option if you’re looking for a luxury, traditional English feel.

Another pick in the heart of Mayfair, The Dorchester is renowned for its unparalleled luxury, historic significance, and timeless elegance, offering guests a blend of classic charm and modern comforts. With its opulent rooms, world-class dining, and exceptional service, The Dorchester remains a favorite among royalty, celebrities, and discerning travelers. Its iconic Afternoon Tea and stunning views of Hyde Park add to its reputation as one of London’s most prestigious and coveted addresses. Oh, and let’s not forget that Elizabeth Taylor signed her Cleopatra contract right here in the bath.

Located in The Old War Office – along with several luxe private residences and one of our favorite Paris lunch spots, Cafe Laperouse – Raffles offers a unique blend of classic charm and modern sophistication. With its stunning interiors, rich history, and exceptional amenities, Raffles stands out as a truly exceptional destination for those seeking an unforgettable experience in one of the city’s most iconic locations.

Where to eat

The best food scene in the world? We think, yes. London’s restaurant scene is as diverse and dynamic as the city itself, offering a blend of culinary traditions from all over the world. From Michelin-starred fine dining experiences to cozy hidden gems, there’s something to satisfy every taste. The city’s multicultural makeup is reflected in its vibrant food culture, with everything from exquisite Indian and West African restaurants to innovative takes on British traditions. Whether you’re seeking avant-garde gastronomy, traditional British fare with a twist, or casual bites in trendy spots, London’s restaurant scene promises the unforgettable.

KOL

With their innovative approach to Mexican cuisine, blending traditional flavors with contemporary techniques, our favorite dining experiences we’ve ever had have been at KOL. Located in one of our favorite areas of London, Marylebone, this Michelin star restaurant offers a uniquely refined dining experience, with dishes crafted using the finest seasonal ingredients, many right before your eyes. While far from a vegan restaurant, they do offer a vegan option, so each time we visit we always do the vegan tasting menu and let me tell you, it’s a life changing experience, start to finish. As you would expect, reservations are hard to come by so plan accordingly and keep an eye out. We always set reminders to try and grab ours right when they open for the month of our trip for a smooth process.

Butter chicken masala, garlic naan, mango chutney – I could go on. Tucked in Mayfair, Gymkhana has made their name with an exquisite take on traditional Indian cuisine, inspired by the colonial-era clubs of India, known as “gymkhanas.” Chic, moody, cozy, stylish – The atmosphere is exceptional, the branding exquisite, and the dishes to die for. Gymkhana is a don’t miss. They book up quickly, so be sure to give yourself plenty of time in planning to get a reservation. We always plan for dinner, but lunch reservations seem to be a little less aggressive.

Vibrant and intimate, with a modern menu that celebrates fresh, seasonal ingredients, Chiltern Firehouse is known for its innovative, easy going menu and impeccable service. It quickly became a hotspot for celebrities, food lovers, and those seeking an exclusive dining experience and remains one of our favorite lunch or dinner spots. Again, they are currently closed due to renovations with no date of reopening, but leaving this here for future reference.

Akoko, with it’s modern, innovative approach to West African cuisine, offers a unique dining experience celebrating bold flavors and traditional West African ingredients with a contemporary twist. This Michelin-starred restaurant was one of favorite experiences on our last trip and a definite for return trips. The ambiance, flavors, and story telling are right up our alley.

Tucked in London’s Fitzrovia district, this cozy little restaurant’s refined yet unpretentious approach to modern British cuisine offers a seasonal menu highlighting the finest local ingredients. With one Michelin star, they offer an a la carte menu and a tasting menu. Think casual and cozy with some seriously delicious sourdough.

New on the scene, Fonda is a vibrant celebration of Mexican cuisine, offering a modern twist on traditional flavors in a warm, stylish setting. Fonda is the second restaurant from Chef Santiago Lastra following the previously gushed about KOL. Inspired by the traditional fonda – a family-owned eatery – along with the vibrant cooking and colors of Mexican markets and homes. It’s a bit more contemporary and casual, making it a must for our next trip across the pond.

With its strikingly unique and artistic atmosphere, Sketch’s Afternoon Tea is always sure to offer a one-of-a-kind dining experience. The Gallery’s interiors are a visual feast, with its iconic pink-hued dining room designed by renowned artist India Mahdavi, paired with their daily live classical string trio, you’re in for a treat. Sketch combines avant-garde culinary techniques with exceptional flavors, providing an innovative and playful approach to fine dining. Its blend of art, design, and world-class cuisine makes for a truly unforgettable experience. P.S. Don’t miss their unique bathroom situation.

Look for a classic British experience? Look no further than The Goring’s Afternoon Tea. With it’s quintessentially British charm and refined elegance, The Goring offers an exceptional afternoon tea experience in a luxurious, intimate setting. Located in the heart of Belgravia, The Goring has long been a favorite for both royalty and discerning guests. With a rich tradition of impeccable service and attention to detail, you’re sure to feel like royalty yourself. Fun fact… This is where Kate Middleton spent the night with her mother and sister the night before her royal wedding, so be sure to take some time to take in the charm of the hotel while you’re there.

With its iconic status and flawless execution – not to mention their signature jade and white bone china – it should come as no surprise that Claridge’s offers one of the most refined afternoon tea experiences in all of London. Served in the elegant Art Deco surroundings of the hotel’s Foyer & Reading Room, it blends timeless tradition with contemporary luxury, leading to a truly memorable experience. Be sure to make your reservations in advance for the best experience.

What to do

London is a treasure trove of cultural experiences, offering an abundance of activities to suit every interest. Art lovers can explore world-renowned galleries like Tate Modern and The National Gallery, where masterpieces from every era await. For history buffs, the British Museum and Victoria & Albert Museum provide fascinating insights into the past, while the Natural History Museum offers a fun and educational adventure for all ages. Theatre enthusiasts will find themselves enchanted by the city’s vibrant West End, where dazzling shows and musicals light up the stage nightly. Whether you’re immersing yourself in the arts, taking a breather in the park, catching a live performance, or indulging in the history, London promises an unforgettable array of experiences to fill your days.

The National Gallery in London is a quiet treasure trove at the heart of Trafalgar Square, home to over 2,300 paintings spanning seven centuries. Open daily from 10am to 6pm (and until 9pm on Fridays), it offers free admission to masterpieces by the likes of Van Gogh, da Vinci, Monet, and Rembrandt. Highlights include Van Gogh’s Sunflowers, da Vinci’s The Virgin of the Rocks, and Turner’s The Fighting Temeraire. Whether you’re a seasoned art lover or a curious wanderer, it’s one of the few places where you can spend an afternoon with the greats. All without spending a penny.

Tucked just behind Trafalgar Square (a separate entrance and gallery from The National Gallery), the National Portrait Gallery offers a uniquely human take on British history, told through the faces that shaped it. Recently reopened after a major renovation, it’s open daily from 10:30am to 6pm (and until 9pm on Fridays), with free entry to its main collection. From the solemn gaze of Shakespeare to striking contemporary portraits of figures like David Bowie and Malala Yousafzai, the gallery spans five centuries of character, power, and style. It’s less about art movements and more about the people behind the moments. Perfect for anyone who prefers history with a little eye contact.

Housed in a former power station on the banks of the Thames, Tate Modern is where contemporary art plugs directly into the city’s current. Open daily from 10am to 6pm (with late opening until 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays), it’s free to enter, though major exhibitions may require tickets. Inside, you’ll find everything from the surreal boldness of Dalí to the haunting minimalism of Rothko, alongside installations that occasionally spill across entire rooms. It’s a place where art doesn’t just hang on the walls. It challenges, surprises, and sometimes even confuses, all in the best of ways.

Tucked beside Buckingham Palace, The King’s Gallery offers a rare peek into the Royal Collection – one of the most remarkable art collections in the world. Open Thursday through Monday from 10am to 5:30pm (last entry at 4:15pm), it’s a ticketed gallery that rotates its exhibitions throughout the year, showcasing everything from Dutch masters and Leonardo da Vinci’s drawings to royal jewels and historical artifacts. While quieter than London’s blockbuster museums, it is no less rich and an elegant detour into the lives, tastes, and treasures of royalty across the centuries. A must do in my royal loving opinion.

Just around the corner from Buckingham Palace, the Royal Mews offers a fascinating behind-the-scenes glimpse into the working side of royal pageantry. Open Thursday through Monday from 10am to 5pm (last entry at 4pm), it’s one of the few places in the world where you can see both centuries-old carriages and the horses that still pull them today. Highlights include the dazzling Gold State Coach used at coronations and the sleek cars of the modern royal fleet. Part museum, part stable, it’s a fascinating blend of tradition and function, where history doesn’t just sit behind glass, it trots!

The Victoria and Albert Museum, or simply the V&A, is a grand celebration of creativity in all its forms – design, fashion, sculpture, textiles, photography, and everything in between. Located in South Kensington and open daily from 10am to 5:45pm (with late openings until 10pm on Fridays), it’s free to enter and endlessly explorable. From medieval treasures to Alexander McQueen gowns, the collection spans 5,000 years and dozens of cultures. It’s the kind of place where you can wander from a 16th-century Italian altarpiece to a 1960s minidress without ever leaving the building. A museum that proves beauty and function have always gone hand in hand and a fantastic way to spend an afternoon.

Nestled in the heart of Chelsea, the Saatchi Gallery is a space that champions contemporary art in all its bold, experimental forms. Open daily from 10am to 6pm and free to enter, it’s a place where the unexpected thrives, whether that’s thought-provoking installations, avant-garde sculpture, or digital art pushing the boundaries of creativity. Known for showcasing emerging artists and challenging the status quo, the gallery offers a fresh perspective on the art world, making it a must-visit for those eager to see what’s next in the ever-evolving landscape of contemporary art.

Situated along the Thames, Tate Britain is the keeper of British art history, offering a sweeping journey from the 1500s to the present day. Open daily from 10am to 6pm, with free admission to the main collection, it’s the perfect place to explore iconic works by Turner, Constable, and Gainsborough, alongside a rich collection of contemporary British artists. From the grandeur of classical landscapes to the raw energy of modern art, Tate Britain invites you to see how British artists have shaped, and been shaped by, centuries of change.

Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, along the South Bank of the Thames, offers a captivating step back in time to experience the Bard’s plays as they were originally performed. Open year-round with tours and performances, it’s a replica of the iconic 16th-century theatre, complete with a thatched roof and open-air design. Whether you’re attending a lively production of Hamlet or taking a behind-the-scenes tour, the Globe brings Shakespeare’s world to life in a way that feels both timeless and intimate. With tickets often as affordable as £5 for standing “groundlings,” it’s a unique way to experience theatre as it was meant to be. Vibrant, immersive, and full of energy.

London’s West End is the beating heart of the city’s theatre scene, where world-class performances light up the stage every night. From timeless musicals like Les Misérables to gripping plays and innovative new works, there’s something for every taste. Theatres are located in the vibrant Covent Garden and Leicester Square areas, making a night out at the West End a perfect mix of culture and excitement. With shows running throughout the week, it’s easy to catch a performance, whether you’re after a dazzling spectacle or a thought-provoking drama. It’s a place where magic happens, and the applause is as much for the unforgettable experience as it is for the stars on the stage.

royal ballet & opera

At the heart of London’s cultural scene, the Royal Ballet and Royal Opera offer unparalleled performances at the iconic Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. Open year-round with a mix of classical and contemporary productions, the Royal Ballet dazzles with exquisite dance, from the elegance of Swan Lake to modern, groundbreaking choreography. Meanwhile, the Royal Opera brings the finest voices and orchestras to life in grand productions of timeless operas like La Traviata and The Magic Flute. Whether you’re captivated by the grace of ballet or the power of opera, the Royal Opera House delivers an experience that’s as much about the atmosphere as it is about the artistry.

big ben

Big Ben, London’s iconic clock tower, is a true symbol of the city, standing proudly at the north end of the Houses of Parliament. While the clock itself is world-renowned, the entire structure is a stunning piece of Victorian architecture, offering a timeless snapshot of London’s history. Though the clock’s chimes are famous worldwide, there’s something uniquely captivating about standing in front of it, watching the hands tick away with the river Thames flowing by. Whether you’re catching it during the day, when its golden clock faces gleam, or in the evening, when it’s illuminated against the London skyline, Big Ben is a must-see. Truly a moment that makes you stop, look up, and take in the fact that you’re actually there, in London.

Westminster Abbey is a breathtaking blend of history, architecture, and royal significance. Open daily (except Sundays), this iconic Gothic masterpiece has been the site of royal coronations, weddings, and burials for over a thousand years. From the grand Abbey itself to the awe-inspiring Poets’ Corner, where literary giants like Chaucer and Dickens are memorialized, every corner of Westminster Abbey tells a story of the past. Whether you’re marveling at the stunning stained glass windows or walking in the footsteps of kings and queens, it’s a place where history is not just preserved, it’s lived. On one of our last trips to London we were able to sit for the Easter service at the Abbey. It was a moment we will never forget and well worth looking into if your trip allows.

Kensington Palace, set within the beautiful Kensington Gardens, offers a fascinating glimpse into royal life, past and present. Open daily from 10am to 6pm (with later hours during summer), this regal residence has been home to many notable royals, including Queen Victoria, Princess Diana, Kate and Will. Inside, you’ll find opulent rooms, from the King’s State Apartments to the more intimate spaces of the Royal Staff Quarters, along with exhibits that reveal the stories of the royals who lived there. The surrounding Kensington Gardens are a perfect escape, with lush greenery, serene paths, and the iconic Round Pond. Whether you’re touring the palace or simply strolling through the gardens, it’s a serene yet majestic way to connect with London’s royal heritage. Be sure to find William and Harry’s new memorial for Princess Diana while you’re there.

Buckingham Palace, the official residence of the British monarch, stands as one of London’s most iconic landmarks. Open to the public during the summer months, you can explore the magnificent State Rooms, where royal ceremonies and events take place, or wander through the stunning gardens that offer a peaceful retreat from the bustle of the city. The Changing of the Guard ceremony, held daily during the summer and less frequently in winter, is a popular spectacle, drawing crowds eager to witness this time-honored tradition. Whether you’re admiring the palace’s grand facade or soaking in the royal history, a visit to Buckingham Palace is a quintessential London experience, offering a true taste of Britain’s monarchy. Be sure to make note of the flag on the palace to know if King Charles is in residence or not. Fascinating.

hyde park

Hyde Park, one of London’s largest and most famous green spaces, is a tranquil escape in the heart of the city. It offers something for everyone, whether it’s a leisurely stroll around the Serpentine Lake, a visit to the peaceful Diana Memorial Fountain, or a moment of reflection in the gardens. With acres of greenery, picturesque walking paths, and even opportunities for boating in summer, it’s the perfect place to unwind or enjoy outdoor activities. Whether you’re seeking serenity or simply a break from the urban buzz, Hyde Park is a lush oasis that invites both relaxation and exploration, making it a must-see spot for any London visitor. I’ve also been told (by Michael, of course) that this is the best park for long runs.

Home to the renowned London Zoo and the vibrant Queen Mary’s Gardens, it’s a haven for nature lovers, with over 12,000 roses in bloom each summer. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful spot to unwind or a place to explore, Regent’s Park combines the charm of nature with the elegance of its historic design, making it a must-visit for anyone in London.

St. James’s Park

St James’s Park, the oldest of London’s Royal Parks, is a picturesque green space right in the heart of Westminster. Framed by iconic landmarks like Buckingham Palace, Horse Guards Parade, and The Mall, it offers postcard-perfect views, especially from the Blue Bridge, where you can spot Big Ben rising behind the trees. The park is known for its charming lake, resident pelicans, and beautifully maintained flowerbeds.
